Crowd assisted reading

This is a beautiful little touch in the Kindle iPad app (I don’t know whether it’s the same in the Kindle, will have to ask my Mum and Dad who’re now both toting one it would seem)…

It brings up a faint underline on passages to say that a significant number of other people have highlighted that passage. Then you too can highlight it in yellow if you wish.

It’s a lovely, subtle thing just to use technology to improve utility and experience. It means you can skim read books by just looking at the things people have highlighted throughout. I do wish I could cut and paste passages from the text, though. I totally get why you can’t, what with publishers concerns for turning books into something as sharable and stealable as music MP3s. But it’ll come one day, I’m sure.
