The Constant Cartographer

“People often talk about being scared of change

But for me I’m more afraid of things staying the same

Cause the game is never won by standing in any one place for too long”

‘Jesus of the Moon’, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

I’ve always loved this image; a map of online communities from xkcd:

The thing is though, even though it’s only two years old, it’s wildly inaccurate now, given that each landmass size is based of number of users, and it omits some now pretty significant countries, like Twitter.

As Mr Cave suggests above, you can’t expect to win the game by standing still in a world like this; embrace change, be alert for the next new thing, redefine your worldview, and keep redrawing your maps as often as you can…

…less ‘The Constant Gardener’, more ‘The Constant Cartographer’.
