You can't close Pandora's box

I just read here on Techcrunch that Pandora, one of the early leaders in internet-based radio stations, have announced that they’re pretty likely to close down in the near future should they have to continue to pay what they do in terms of royalties to labels & artists.

Not that you can get it any more in the UK anyway…

Forcing the new world to play by old world rules seems pretty strange, and sad.  The music industry once again is attempting to apply the economics of the industrial economy, and all it will do is close down another legal route for them to receive an amount of money which probably corresponds to true market value for music.

Cue more people disappearing off to other newsites like muxtape or blip.fm where the music won’t generate the music industry any revenue at all.

(OBVIOUS METAPHOR ALERT)

You can close Pandora, but the box has been opened.
